4 April marks the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, officially proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2005. On this occasion the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), together with partners, organized a photo exhibition featuring “Safe Ground” campaign which presents how mine fields are turned into playing fields.

The campaign is aimed at raising awareness on threats posed by mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices.  Poland has been proud to be among supporters of UNMAS actions and this year’s commemoration.

“The exhibition and UNMAS campaign Safe Ground provide excellent examples of the nexus between mine action, peace and security, sustainable development and humanitarian assistance. Events like the one we holding today remind us that mine action is about giving hope, restoring trust, bringing security and building community, also through sport activities. We believe that it is our moral obligation to assist people in returning safely to their homes so that they can rebuild their lives and regain freedom” – said ambassador Joanna Wronecka, Permanent Representative of Poland to the UN, in her opening remarks.
